Giraffes

This week we were on Safari! We’ve been talking about drawing the “line of motion” and “large shapes” in the animals we’ve been drawing. At the beginning of class, we practiced those techniques in our sketchbooks. Then we did more finished drawings using our sight-size method of drawing while working at the easels. This week we drew giraffes, colored them with colored pencils, and put a giraffe-print cardstock frame around the edges for a finish. Awesome!

Blossoms

As I am looking forward to spring, our classroom this week was bursting with blossoms! Taking a cue from the artist Georgia O’Keeffe, the students zoomed in on blooms, drawing sections of closely cropped flowers. They drew the flower on a large scale with white pastel pencil on 11 by 14 inch black posterboard. Then they used oil pastels in delicious colors and layered color upon color, resulting in rich hues. Roses

For Valentine’s Day, the students drew roses in pencil on drawing paper. Then they transferred their drawings onto watercolor paper and painted their drawings with watercolor paints. Quite lovely!

Zebra

This week the students did drawings of a zebra in graphite on drawing paper. They transferred their zebra drawings onto cardstock and painted them with acrylics. Then we used a zebra-print sheet of cardstock as a frame for the paintings. Cool!

Fall Foliage

We set up a fall still life of gourds, pumpkins, pine cones, and fall leaves. While using the comparative method of drawing and our observation skills, the students studied and drew the fall still life with white pastel pencils on black posterboard. Then they colored their seasonal still life drawings with richly colored oil pastels.

Cockatoo

The students each drew a cockatoo in pencil on drawing paper. Then they transferred their drawings onto watercolor paper and used ink pens to outline their drawings. Finally, they painted their drawings with watercolor paints. Beautiful!

Still Life

We set up 2 still lifes: a vase with flowers and a bowl of fruit. I taught the kids the comparative method of drawing while studying our still life objects. Using the comparative method and our observation skills, we drew both still lifes with graphite on paper and colored our drawings using colored pencils.

Cranes

This week the kids did drawings of cranes in pencil. At first the kids thought that the picture looked hard to draw, but we broke it down into easy shapes… and our shapes turned into cranes! We used transfer paper to transfer our drawings onto cardstock and painted them with acrylics. The kids also painted a sheet of colored cardstock that became a frame for the crane paintings.
